Tenerife Portrait Photography FAQs
Portrait photography focuses on capturing a person or group of people. The goal is to showcase the subject's personality, expression, and emotion in a visually compelling way. This can include close-up headshots, full-body shots, or environmental portraits that show the subject in their surroundings. As a portrait photographer Tenerife is an amazing place full of spectacular locations and having hiked all over the Canary islands over the years I'm lucky to know so many of them.
There are various types of portrait photography, including:
Studio Portraits: Taken in a controlled environment with professional lighting. With modern lighting, as studio can be set up anywhere in a short space of time and more often than not this will be in your home.
Environmental Portraits: Taken in your natural surroundings, such as at your workplace or outdoors at a beach, in the forests or mountains.
Headshots: Close-up shots typically used for professional purposes, such as for resumes or social media profiles.
Family Portraits: Capturing family members and pets together in one shot.
Promotion and publicity: where products such as jewellery or clothes are being modelled or photos for websites and social media for professionals.
Boudoir photography features intimate, sensual, romantic, and erotic images primarily intended for the enjoyment of the subjects and their partners. Often they are a surprise gift by a bride to their future husband or taken after some form of body transformation such as muscle gains in the gym, weight loss after a diet or gender transformation.
Wardrobe: Choose clothes that fit well, and avoid overly bright patterns or logos. Solid colors usually work best.
Hair & Makeup: Make sure you're comfortable with your hair and makeup or consider hiring professionals for a polished look.
Rest & Hydration: Get a good night’s sleep and stay hydrated before the shoot to look your best.
Discuss Your Vision: Talk to your photographer about your expectations, style, and desired outcome to ensure alignment.
A portrait session usually lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity and style of the shoot, as well as the number of outfit changes or locations involved.
Style: Review their portfolio to ensure their style matches what you're looking for (e.g., classic, modern, dramatic, light and airy).
Experience: Check how long they’ve been photographing and if they specialize in portraits.
Personality: Ensure you feel comfortable with the photographer. A friendly and professional demeanor can help you relax during the session.
Reviews & References: Read reviews and ask for references from past clients.
Price: Ensure their rates fit within your budget while still providing the quality you desire.
Number of retouched photos: Some photographers will only deliver a very few fully retouched photos and charge heavily for additional ones. Ensure that your photographer guarantees at least 30 retouched photos.
Some good questions to ask include:
What is your experience with portrait photography?
Can I see your portfolio or past work?
What is included in your package? (e.g., number of retouched photos, print options)
What is your pricing structure, and do you offer a payment plan?
How long will it take to receive my photos?
It depends on the type portrait you are looking for. If it is a professional portrait then your workplace is probably ideal because then you will be seen in your work environment. If you are having photos of a team then this is definitely the best location and best done in the morning to avoid delays. Other sessions best in the environment are sports, events, holidays and many portraits benefit from a dramatic backdrop such as a sunset. Fortunately Tenerife is full of beautiful locations. Other types if sessions are best in your home such as boudoir or personal and family portraits because it is a comfortable environment an clothes, accessories and makeup are in easy reach.
It is often helpful to meet the photographer before the session, either in person or virtually. This allows you to discuss your vision, the session details, and your preferences. It can also help establish a rapport and ease any nerves before the shoot.
